Why are you looking for a Surrogate?
Sam has inherited Polycystic kidney disease (PKD). If she carries a child herself, it would life-threatening. Our 4 embryos do NOT have the problematic gene, so the PKD will not affect our future child(ren). Unfortunately PKD has taken the life of her father, uncles and a lot of relatives. Sam suffered great pain dealing with this incurable disease, so we hope the disease will stop here.
Tell us about your family & loved ones.
Sam's mother was in the journey from the beginning and very supportive. Lorenz's mother heard of the news, was very surprised, but then became very supportive. In Hong Kong, surrogacy is not widely discussed. Lorenz's father is just excited to have grandchildren! Lorenz's sister will probably will be surprised, but will be supportive as her friend going through a similar process. Sam doesn’t have any siblings, also why she hopes to have more than 1 child!
We have talked to a few of our friends about it and all of them understand and are very supportive. We even have some friends in Canada that can help just in case, one of them a professional nurse! Friends are out strong support.
Would you like to attend appointments with your Surrogate?
We would love to join appointments if by any chance we can travel to Canada during the pregnancy! Since we are from Hong Kong, we hope we can join virtually to see the process.
What are your thoughts on termination of a pregnancy due to genetic abnormalities or complications related to the pregnancy?
We strongly support termination of a pregnancy due to genetic abnormalities or complications related to the pregnancy. The whole reason we are looking for a Surrogate is because we want the baby to be healthy and free from genetic abnormalities. The Surrogate's safety is the top priority - we don't want to risk a life for a life.
If the Surrogate becomes pregnant with multiples, how would you feel? How do you feel about the possibility of selective reduction being recommended due to a multiple pregnancy?
Wow, multiples would be amazing! Our dream is to have two babies- one boy and one girl, we would be overjoyed with twins! However, we understand multiples would increase the risks to the Surrogate, and we would support selective reduction if it did put her at risk. In general, we prefer to do what the doctor recommends for the safety of the Surrogate.
Are you vaccinated for Covid-19? Do you have a preference for a Surrogate to have been vaccinated for Covid-19?
Yes we are vaccinated for Covid-19. We are happy to work with a Surrogate who is or isn’t vaccinated.
What kind of relationship do you want to have with your Surrogate during the pregnancy?
We hope to have a relationship that is like friends and/or family. We hope we can always chat about anything and everyone feels comfortable sharing their feelings. Most importantly, we want to keep everything transparent.
Do you want to be in the delivery room when your child is born?
Yes, but we also understand if the Surrogate does not want one of us or both of us there. Whatever makes her feel more comfortable/safer. We respect the privacy.
What kind of relationship do you hope to have with your Surrogate after the birth of your child?
We hope to keep in touch via Whatsapp, possibly through text/video calls and sending pictures of the child. We would love to have a sibling journey, so we hope to keep in touch with the Surrogate if she will consider being our Surrogate again. When the child gets older, we hope to visit the Surrogate in person as a family to thank her. Chinese culture dictates that you are forever in debt to someone. The least we can do is to recognize and respect that. In general we like to create lifelong memories.
Would you be open to a home birth?
Yes, though we prefer the birth to take place at a hospital with the support of medical professionals/doctors.
Are you open to midwifery care?
Yes we are open to it, but would still prefer the birth to take place at a hospital.
Would you like your Surrogate to provide breastmilk?
Yes- extremely! We think breastfeeding is best for the baby and the Surrogate. Especially since Sam cannot provide it herself. We also plan to stay in Canada around 2-3 months after the birth, so breastmilk will be a huge help.
What will you tell the child about the Surrogate, and the circumstances of their birth? If your child asks to meet the Surrogate, how will you feel?
We will tell them the truth when they get older, like 12, and can fully understand.
We would be very happy and supportive of the child meeting the Surrogate in person, we encourage and support that
It is a strong value of Chinese tradition to remember the favor/sacrifice someone does for you.
If the transfer is unsuccessful, will you want to try again? If so, how soon after?
Yes, we would want to try again. Not sure how long after, and only when both us and the Surrogate are ready emotionally and physically.
If this surrogacy journey is successful, would you want to complete a sibling journey? What do you envision that looking like? (timeline, same Surrogate etc.)
Yes - we would love that. Hopefully the same Surrogate, and maybe within 1 or 2 years after the first one.
What are your plans for childcare once the child is born?
We plan to move from our apartment to our house when the baby is born. It is likely we would reduce our work considerably so we can care for our child. Sam's mom and Lorenz's mom are likely to help us as well. Lorenz's mom has professional training and certification in newborn care, so she is an expert! We will also likely hire 1 or 2 full-time domestic helpers once a child arrives. (sounds crazy, but it is pretty standard in Hong Kong)
What does a typical weekend look like for you?
We enjoy going for a nice brunch together, going for coffee or just staying in reading books. We also enjoy just walking around together - either shopping or taking in the beautiful views of the sea. In the evenings we enjoy preparing home-cooked dinners. Sam is an excellent chef!
What are some of your interests/ activities?
Together, we enjoy watching movies/tv shows and reading novels. We are developing a new hobby of playing golf together too! It’s been lots of fun learning it together.
Individually, Sam enjoys Pilates, playing violin, learning German, and hiking. Lorenz enjoys playing poker, watching Formula 1 racing, NBA, and going to the gym.
Other information:
Sam is a huge Harry Potter fan. She even made our wedding magical- you should totally see the pictures and the video! We have been to many beautiful places and have so many fun stuff to share. However, our magical wedding is definitely the one we love the best.
“We are a very easygoing and caring couple, you would be so happy to work with us! Sam and Lorenz are like two totally different kinds of person, one is so messy one is so neat (guess who), and one is so logical one is so emotional. But together we make the best team, and now we can't wait to have a little one of us, maybe he will be our perfect combination? We always stay curious about new things especially now with our new family member. Hopefully you can make our dream come true and become our extend family!”
